The Wonders Of Ogbono Soup

A Delicious Plate Of Ogbono Soup

Ogbono soup is a delicious Nigerian dish prepared from dry ground Ogbono seeds. It is also referred to as Draw Soup because of it’s thick and slimy nature which makes swallowing a lot easier.

This soup originated from the eastern part of Nigeria, from the Igbo tribe. Ogbono soup is normally eaten with pounded yam, starch, or garri.

Ogbono soup can contain meat, fish, chicken, or whatever choice of meat you decide to use to cook it. It also contains a few green vegetables.

Eating A Plate Of Ogbono Soup

Ogbono soup is actually my favorite soup right from when I was a kid. I loved it because it’s easy to use it to swallow garri or pounded yam.

Let me explain, in Nigeria, we swallow garri or pounded yam when we eat our native soups as you would normally do when you swallow a medicine pill. That’s how we eat soup traditionally, a form of cultural indoctrination from childhood.

As usual, on a weekend, I dressed up nicely and visited the same restaurant in Lekki, Lagos Nigeria, the one I stated in my previous post. This was like my second visit there. I like the restaurant because the food is prepared professionally with the utmost care and hygiene.

When I got there I placed my other and I requested fried chicken in my Ogbono soup in place of beef. That’s kind of how I wanted it. Beef is the usual meat that goes with Ogbono soup but I decided to try something else.

The waiter finally brought my food, and it looked amazing. On the tray, there was cutlery by the side. Now, there are new generation Nigerians that adopt western culture and eat traditional food with cutlery. Unfortunately, I don’t. I eat with my hands as culture demands, so I told the waiter to take those away. Bon appetit!
